Poem: Self Reflection

 Self Reflection

By Benita Blocker, 2022

Sensitive scalp, sensitive skin

Misunderstood the artist within

Nickel allergy; no pierced ears

My jewelry has to be real so it won't kill.

I come in four different shades just like the seasons.

I throw shade if you give me a reason.

Never conceived, never tried.

Daughter of a Cancer, born with pride

And I'm a Virgo until I die.

Poem: Birthrightful Position

Birthrightful Position

By Benita Blocker, July 2022

There's been plenty who wanted to lay me down.

Sadly, for some, that meant six feet under ground.

But you see as a diamond- I've been used to a lot of dirt.

Even been in a rut

but never been a slut.

Please don't let my sensuality

confuse you.

My artistic expression

elude you.

I am just having fun

on a run.

My purpose is more than surface.

It's a journey

Out of concern

To learn

To discern

As I return

Bàck to my Birthrightful Position.

Poem: No Troublemakers

No Troublemakers

By Benita Blocker, 2022

There's no Troublemakers in my inventory.

So the slave Master says with pride.

I treat my slaves well so they don't get out of line.

Their clothes on their backs are clean so they are just fine.

They have church every Sunday.

A large supper makes it a fun day.

No outside influences are permitted.

No secular music; only gospel music is the limit.

No movie theaters; no sports arena.

Just the prison of the plantation and their quiet demeanor.

Aren't you blessed to have Masters like us?

A mom and a dad that you can trust.

Remain a good little girl and just hush.

Poem: In Memory of my Aunt Elizabeth Blocker Beck

Elizabeth Blocker Beck

By Benita Blocker, September 2020

We gather today in memory of Queen Elizabeth Blocker Beck.

A Celebration of life as her sun has set.

A daughter, a sister, a mother, a grandmother, an auntie, cousin and friend.

Child of Christ as the pearly Gates welcome her in.

Her labor on this Earth is recognized through her heart and kind soul- as a survivor, a warrior, a nurturer, and a minister.

So we accept her passing with a happy heart that she is at peace in her crown and walking toward the light
without a cross to bear for she has finished her fight.

At home, she has arrived.

Announcing your Royal daughter Queen Elizabeth Blocker Beck.

My Memorial of My Uncle

Dear Uncle,
After two decades, I finally held your hand again.
I was overwhelmed over the spark in your eyes,
 when I shared with you
 who I was.

I did not initially recognize you
 without your brother
pointing you out to me.
Eventually, I started to see you
how I remembered you.

I saw your fight,
and your willing to exist.
I am so sorry that our healthcare system failed you.
I am so sorry that our family distance failed you.

Please know that your brother loved you so much.
I felt the helplessness that he felt
 as he had no say
 in your continued care.

I was so happy to intervene
to help him understand
what was being done and
what has to be in done in the future.

My dad began to make peace
within himself, and
I found comfort that
the heaviness that we both felt was given over
to a Higher Power.

Often times, I find comfort
in knowing that my loved ones exist.
So when I find out that they exist no more,
it hurts.

This world will pass
so rest in peace until
we meet again.

With love,
Forever,
Your niece.

Poem: No Place Like Home

Photography by Benita Blocker

Home is a soft bed,
A tender touch,
Not a sound,
Just love all around.

Peace and quiet,
Special occasions,
Lots of good food,
Warm welcomes
and a willingness to make room.

Safe, secure, simply,
no place like
Home.

Winter Love Affair

Winter Love Affair
Poem written by Benita Blocker

No poking;
Barely stroking;
Enveloping every curve.

Keeping me warm throughout the night;
Sustained cuddling that's just right.
Me? Put up a fight?

Soft, gentle touches meet me at every turn.
No worries about creeping;
Just peaceful sleeping.

Pushing the right buttons,
Turns up the heat.
The dependability can't be beat.

Oh how I love . . . .
My Electric Blanket.

Overweight Blues

Overweight Blues
Poem by Benita Blocker

Bumper cars sit too low.
The elevated height of the SUVs means taking it slow.

Restaurant booths fit too tight.
Toilet paper lost in your crack; just isn't right.

Putt Putt playing becomes a chore.
Reaching deep down for the ball is a lot of bending to endure.

Carnival rides require a boost,
and tug o'war begins when shoestrings come unloosed.

Sit-ups and Leg lifts are a great start.
Especially when bending over too quickly delivers a fart.

Increasing water intake flushes the toxins away.
Skipping out on dessert prevents the fat from an added stay.

Hopefully, these few tips will aid in getting you ripped.
And by next year, you will be be ready
to skinny dip.

Female SuperStar Celebrity Pledge

Picture from the November 2014 publication of Ebony Magazine-
Article called "Dirty Little Secret."

Female SuperStar Celebrity Pledge
Poem by Benita Blocker

Female Superstar Celebrities
using the illusion of sex for sale
while remaining untouchable
behind a computer screen, magazine or a television frame.

Leaving sex slaves ages 12 to 14 to satisfy men
who were left visually stimulated and erect on a bed frame.
Is there no shame?

Underage sex has always been around.
Yet, in the past, there were more men with integrity
to stomp sexual violations into the ground.

Children could be children and be safe in their own home.
Yet in this century, safety seems seasonal and home- no where to be found.

Young girls who have yet to finish high school do not know where to run.
Barely finished puberty and sex trafficking is all around.

So Female Celebrity Superstars, it is time to pledge to shut down,
the money-makers,
the goldmines,
the rump-shakers,
the shot-callers, and
show these girls about self-worth and what it takes to be a role model.

Female celebrities of the past banded together - showing a lot of class.
Their dress for success had less to do with self-expression and sex appeal.
But more to do with sisterhood, talent, and smarter deals.
By taking this pledge, you start silent reparations
to aid our young girls in preparation
to become whole again.

The ComeBack

The Comeback
by Benita Blocker
 2014

You say
my brows - too bushy
my walk -  too mushy

my fashion - too boring
my shoes - nonscoring

my purse - too dated
my hair - too inflated.

I say-
the depth of my eyes captivate as much as
the warmth of my smile.

The fullness of my lips mesmerizes like
the brilliance of my mind.

The smoothness of my skin accentuates
the twists and turns of my curvaceous body.

Dizzy watching the dimples in my cheeks?
Makes this comeback complete.

The Ego Tripping Mentality

The Ego Tripping Mentality
by Benita Blocker

All your past girlfriends were dimes,
So you say that I should be happy that you gave me some time.

Can a man be sentenced over a piece of ass?
Most men know that it's hard to prove rape, take notes, you're in class.

So she wins the child support payment increase, now he's mad.
Using rape to show his power, how sad.

Sometimes familiar territory gives false permission,
Forcing another into submission.

Passed out people can not give consent.
Under aged is statutorily indecent.

Handicapped means no.
A protective order means there was a violation before.

No means no
ego tripping mentality.

Sexual Worth Affirmation

Sexual Worth Affirmation
by Benita Blocker

Any adult believing in the separation of the human mind from the human body
opens the doors of confusion without boundaries.

Molestation, rape, incest, abuse are real.
Such topics should be taught to children early so they will know the deal.

Spouses, friends, relatives, coaches,
ministers, mentors, politicians, young and old associates,
all potential abusers whose sexual choices may be gender or age inappropriate.

Social workers, co-workers, sergeants, officers, kin,
all may recognize opportunities for sexual harassment to begin.

One on one encounters can easily go the wrong way,
So always remaining alert to sexual advancement must everyone stay.

The value of another's body for some may be just another notch on a belt
without understanding that all sexual violations are a lifetime felt.

Without a Clue, God Looks Out for You!

Without a Clue, God Looks Out for You!
by Benita Blocker

As I was new to this hotel lounge and loved live music,
I decided to join two other ladies already boozing.

Then after the band finished their set,
they noticed that we had not left yet.

A courteous invitation to their room was gladly accepted.
We followed the crew a few floors up
and the private scene included some puffs.

So what are those funny looking cigarettes I decided to ask.
Upon hearing the answer, I decided to pass.

I never learned to smoke and knew my limits when
one of the guys asked to holler at me for a minute.

Upon seeing my driver's license and insulting my picture,
he then asked me to join him in an adjoining room for a mixture,
seeing 2am on my watch was a clue that my personal curfew was due.

I kindly said my cordial goodbyes and exited the scene without a clue
that God indeed has a special ability to look out for you.

When Leftovers Look So Good

When Letovers Look So Good
by Benita Blocker

So my leftovers looked so good
that you the fiancee felt the need to call me the wife to harass and degrade me based on the misinformation that my husband gave you?

So my leftovers looked so good
that you would call the Human Resources department at my job and hack my company email in an attempt to sabotage and destroy me?

So my leftovers looked so good
in the muscle car with convertible top that I financed for my husband with the customized car tag that I designed for him as well?

So my leftovers looked so good
in the luxury apartment that I secured for my husband during our marriage that he eventually furnished with furniture that he acquired because I rebuilt his bad to no credit?

So my leftovers looked so good
in the career that I assisted my husband in training for?

So my leftovers looked so good
that you did not believe me when I told you that the best thing about my marriage to my husband was
our DIVORCE.

The Realization of False Pretense

The Realization of False Pretense
by Benita Blocker

You said that
I would make you the happiest man in the world

realizing that
you were self-centered

realizing that
you were willing to deny your own children

realizing that
you were willing to deny your own felonious past

realizing that
you were caught up in your own inflated world

realizing that
you were willing to fortifty your fate of despair

realizing that
all fingers were crossed

realizing there was no value in
Your Marriage License.

Medical Misconduct Memories

Medical Misconduct Memories
by Benita Blocker

Without warning, one firm massaging stroke of her thumb over my clitoris resulted in the swelling of my labia, the parting of my inner lips and the opening of my vagina as the speculum glided in for my pap smear.

The female nurse practitioner mentions my cervix is small as I am still trying to normalize my body's involuntary response to the deliberate intent of arousal that was initiated.

I kept my legs wide open for an extended period of time because I was uncertain if the speculum was still inserted inside of me. Upon her confirmation that the exam was complete, after my having to ask, I knew that such a deep and prolonged arousal did not sit well with me.

Nor did the casual conversation during my breast examination with a different male doctor during a different well woman visit.

Nor the discovery that the birth control pills prescribed for me by yet another male doctor who was later found guilty of a record number of sterilization cases involving Black women had purposely included me in his cause to eliminate as many Black births as possible.

All mental scars reminding me that medical misconduct does exist.

Confessions? This Joke Isn't Funny Anymore

In honor of  Independence Day, I wanted to share some thoughts . . .

To my Date Rapist:
You raped me on more than one occasion. You got comfortable taking advantage of me at your leisure until one day that one final encounter ripped me to my soul.  You were an expert in the hand position to inflict enough pain into the shoulder joint to make me and your obvious past victims cooperate without any signs of bruising.  You knew to keep an eye on me in case I made an attempt to call the police.  Then you knew when you were arrested at the hospital wearing your fraternity letters that:

This Joke wasn't funny anymore.

To my Townhouse Neighbor:
You wanted to have your fence built over my property line to avoid the extra charge of anchoring the fence to your concrete patio.  My "no" was not enough that you had to call over another neighbor to add to the confusion resulting in the police being called and the police finding "no signs of injuries."  Yet, out of anger,  you and  the other neighbor let your imaginations go wild allowing massive lies to be fabricated, and the story grew bigger and bigger.  After a newsletter to the entire subdivision stating the truth of the matter caused massive embarrassment for all the neighbors involved, and the fact that the encounter was dismissed.  You all had to realize that:

This Joke wasn't funny anymore.

To my Hair practitioner that overcharged and under delivered:
Upon collecting and organizing all of my supporting documentation that the final delivery was out of specifications, I repeatedly asked for a partial refund.  My cordial refund requests were repeatedly ignored.  The producers from the Judge Mathis show were repeatedly turned down.  Your attorney was slow to return my phone calls.  Finally, when the sheriff served you with a small claims complaint showing our local court date and then you realized:

This Joke wasn't funny anymore.

To the multi-billion dollar non-profit, public healthcare System Human Resource department:
I asked why the hairdresser position had to be posted when I had already been working there for five years as a hairdresser.  Your answer was that you preferred that managers post all positions. Then the position was filled solely based on preferential treatment which ripped me to the core of my soul.  Then the position came available for a second time within a year later, I asked when would the position be posted again, and your response was that you are not required to post all positions.  Well, after several EEOC complaints, several articles, several correspondence exchanges over a four year period and counting, your department has to have realized:

This Joke wasn't funny anymore.
