QR Code Review: Marketing Barcodes

These special barcodes called QR codes(quick response codes) when scanned with a smartphone usually takes you to a web page. These QR codes are in a lot of magazines and other marketing literature.

In order to read/scan them, you need to download a free application called "Barcode Reader" for android phones or "Barcode Assistant" for blackberry phones. For iphone users, you have a few options as well.

Those same applications can assist you in creating your own "barcode" for your own webpage. If you decide to do this, make sure the size of the QR code is large enough for all phones to scan or capture.

For example: The "G6 QR code" pictured on the right was too small for my blackberry to scan properly. However, the "Broyhill furniture barcode" on the left scanned correctly on the first try. So size does matter in the case of marketing with QR codes!

  1. Also, if you are creating marketing literature with a QR Code, avoid high glossy paper. The glossy paper seems to create a glare that interferes with the camera capturing a clear picture. Even if the size of QR code is large enough; the glare can still interfere with the Blackberry camera enough that it will not read. At that point, the QR code will look "leading edge" but serves no purpose if it will not scan for the customer interested in your product/service.
